The Legacy Foundation
An attempt to host The Olympic and Paralympic Games is admittedly a long shot for any world-class city. Through our unique approach, the Dallas 2020 Committee intends to leave a lasting legacy for our community - regardless of the outcome of the future bid.
A winning bid must not only cast our city’s facilities and tactical plan in a favorable light, it must demonstrate why bringing The Games to Dallas will further the International Olympic Committee’s goals for the Olympic movement.
Contrary to typical Olympic bids and host cities, the Dallas 2020 Committee is raising funds and developing a comprehensive legacy program for our community in advance of any bid. Our goal is to prepare our city to be more Olympic, sharing the stories of The Olympic Games so that our citizens understand that The Olympics are a movement, not just the biggest sporting event in the world.
We seek to create a sports organization similar to what Los Angeles formed after the 1984 Summer Olympic Games. Unlike the LA84 Foundation, which utilized money left over after The Games, the Dallas 2020 Committee will raise funds and launch programs that impact our community in advance of hosting The Olympic Games.
The Dallas 2020 Committee envisions serving the youth of our community through five key programs:
- Providing character-based education and fitness programs through sports
- Affording greater opportunities for underserved youth to participate in sports
- Holding coaching clinics and promoting sportsmanship and leadership
- Creating programs to foster parental involvement in youth sports
- Building and upgrading much needed facilities in underserved areas of our community
With an eye toward making a positive contribution to the city no matter the outcome, the future Dallas Olympic bid can only be a positive force, especially for the underserved youth of North Texas. As the 1984 Games forever changed the way that The Olympics are funded, we believe that the Dallas bid might forever change the way that future Olympic bids are conducted.
